Large Vein Treatment

Varicose vein procedures may be done in the awake patient with local anesthesia, however Dr. Katsaros prefers to place the patient under mild sedation. All of these procedures are performed by Dr. Katsaros and are covered by insurance. The varicose vein procedures we perform under sedation include:

  • Traditional excision of varicose veins via 4 mm micro incisions with small instruments.
  • Endovenous (inside the vein) laser ablasion. This laser is completely different from the laser used for the external treatment of spider veins. A small probe (like an intravenous catheter) is placed inside the vein under ultrasound guidance. The vein is destroyed by heat from the inside out.
  • Endoveous Radio Frequency ablasion. A small catheter 9like an IV catheter) is placed inside the vein using ultrasound guidance. Radiofrequency energy (rather than laser) is used to destroy the laser from inside out.

Sometimes it is best to use more than one modality for a given situation. Dr. Katsaros will discuss this with each patient.
