IPL vs Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion involves the mechanical removal of the superficial layer of dead cells, dried skin and debris of the skin. A superficial chemical peel does the same thing using chemicals. Microdermabrasion is designed to remove dead cells and debris, so that medicinal creams can penetrate to the deeper layers. Microdermabrasion does not remove discolored cells (photodamaged cells) because photodamaged cells are too deep for microdermabrasion.

Intense pulse light is the most effective treatment for photoaging. It typically removes 50-70% of the age spots per session. Light penetrated to the layers of the mid-epidermis to remove discolored skin cells. The effects of IPL are permanent.
