IPL and "Laser" Skin Tightening

IPL is designed to treat the discoloration of photoaged skin, but it does not tighten skin. Photodamage occurs at the mid-depths of the epidermis. However, sunlight, aging, smoking and certain medication will reduce the production and strength of collagen-which is located below the skin. Collagen is the body’s support structure. If collagen is loose, the overlying skin will be loose and flabby.

Radio Frequency (RF) treatments use invisible energy to tighten existing collagen and stimulate the production of more collagen. Lay persons refer to RF treatments as “laser skin tightening” but, strictly speaking, RF wavelengths are invisible.

In either case, when a patient has both discolored skin as well as flabby skin, IPL may be followed by RF “laser” tightening. RF treatments used with a special hand piece are FDA approved for the treatment of cellulite.
